How To Write a Proper 경력기술서
If your Korean job applications keep getting ignored, you might be missing a 경력기술서. Here's what it is and how to write one that gets you hired.

The two Korean resumes
The first is the 이력서. Think of it like a basic profile, almost like a Facebook page. It lists who you are, where you live, where you went to school, and where you've worked. It’s a summary of who you are as a person.
The second is the 경력기술서. This one is important. It walks through the actual work you did, project by project, and shows what you achieved. If your 이력서 says "I worked at Company A," your 경력기술서 says "here's exactly what I did there, and here's what changed due to my contribution."
When a simple 이력서 is enough
You don't always need a 경력기술서. The basic 이력서 is fine if you've already worked in Korea for a long time, you're getting a referral and the job is almost guaranteed, or a big Korean corporate like Samsung or LG required it (they often have their own application process with their hiring system).
If that’s not the case, try writing a 경력기술서 instead.
What goes inside a 경력기술서
It's not complicated. For each experience, you cover a few simple parts.
The 경력기술서 checklist
Here's the whole thing in one place. Run each experience through it, and check the boxes until every one is done.
- [ ] 개요 (overview): a short summary of what the project was
- [ ] 기간 (timeline): the dates you worked on it
- [ ] 주요업무 (main responsibilities): what you were actually in charge of
- [ ] 주요성과 (key results): the real business outcomes, with numbers where you can
- [ ] 인사이트 (insight): the lesson you learned from it (optional, but great for junior to mid roles)
- [ ] Write each part in STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
- [ ] Treat every line of the job description as a question, and answer it directly in your 경력기술서
- [ ] Keep it under 3 pages
- [ ] Cut anything that doesn't answer the job description
- [ ] Why Korean companies care so much
You might wonder why they want all this detail.
Two people can list the exact same project. One of them led it. The other barely helped. A plain 이력서 can't tell them apart. A 경력기술서 can. It shows how much of the work was really you.
Korean companies don't want someone who was just going along for the project. They want to see your actual skillsets in leading the work. That's what the 경력기술서 shows.
The hidden bonus
Your 경력기술서 also preps you for the interview.
Think about it. When the interviewer asks, "what was your biggest result at Company A," you don't panic. You already wrote the answer down as part of the key results. So you're not only sending a stronger resume, you're walking into the interview already prepared for your project experiences.
