What is a portfolio?

A portfolio is a summary of projects and experiences that are directly correlated to the job description.

However, it’s different from a resume in the sense that it’s not an extension of your resume, but rather explaining your thought process, the contribution amount and the final business metrics.

In a nutshell, it answers these three strong questions:

  • How did you define the problem?
  • What process did you follow?
  • What was the business result?

This is the basic framework. For each industry, only the details get more specific:

Tech: the technical problem, how you worked through it, how you optimized it, and the final business result.

Marketing: the problem, your strategy, and the result.

Design: the UX problem, your design process, and the result.

The pattern is basically the same. Problem, process, result, every time. And you always tie it back to a business result, as that’s what’s important to a company in the first place.

Format Specifics

Don’t overthink this step. The whole point of a portfolio is to be clean and easy to read.

I recommend a simple PDF in 16:9 slide format. It's clean, it opens anywhere, and nothing breaks.

You can also build and deploy a portfolio website, and for some tech candidates that's a nice to have. But a site can go down, break its links, or hit an unexpected connection issue.

A clear PDF you upload to Google Drive and link, or just attach to your job application, is the best recommended format for all industries.

The Checklist

Aim for about 20 to 30 pages, and tie everything back to the job description.

Start with 2 to 3 main projects that directly answer the job you want. For each one, include:

  • A one-line summary of the goal
  • How much of the work was actually you
  • The core process you used to reach the solution
  • The final results, with real numbers

Then add 2 to 3 side projects that make you stand out. These can be personal projects tied to the role. For example:

  • In marketing, show your AI automation or a campaign you built yourself
  • In tech, show your tech blog or a personal brand you grew
  • In design, show your AI workflows or generative-AI work

Structure the whole thing like this:

  • A summary profile with your contact info (1 page)
  • A table of contents (1 page)
  • Your projects, from highest priority to lowest (20 to 25 pages)
  • A short conclusion (1 page)

The Final Point

Your portfolio isn't just proof of your work. It's proof that you can look back at your skillsets, previous experiences and organize it clearly for the companies to understand. The ability to present yourself clearly is actually a skill you want for getting ahead in your career, especially as an expat in Korea.
