3 Career Cheat Codes for Foreigners in Korea

Here are three cheat codes that can actually help you in Korea as a foreigner.

Do them early in your career and you will be ahead of almost everyone your age.

1. Start at a startup, not a big name corporate

In Korea, a lot of people have one goal: land at a named corporation. So they spend years preparing for highly competitive spots at Sk, Samsung, Lg etc.

Instead of going for corporations, aim for a startup or a small business that will sponsor you and give you a lot of work. You will do more, own more, and build a portfolio faster than the person at a big firm. This is especially true when AI is shaping the career landscape day by day and most of the work will become automated by AI, so it is good to build the portfolio fast as you can than others.

Then, when you are ready after 1-2 years, you take the experience to a bigger named company. Early in your career, what you can actually do matters more and once you gain that experience, you’ll have an easier chance at moving to a company of your choice.

2. Always have a plan B

Always have a second stream of income and an exit plan. Not because you are disloyal, but because a stable job is not a safe one anymore. Even where the Korean law makes it hard to fire a regular employee outright, companies have other ways to let go of someone, and foreigners tend to feel that pressure first.

If you have a fallback, it keeps you from being trapped in a job that has already decided to let you go. It also gives you leverage, because you are not negotiating from fear. Build the plan B while things are good, not after they go bad.

3. Network like it is part of the job

Networking is a skill, not a personality trait, and the people who build it early get the referrals, and the roles that never get posted publicly.

Put them together

Notice the pattern. Each cheat code trades short-term comfort for long-term position. You take the smaller job for the bigger experience. You give up the illusion of a safe company for real options. You do the awkward networking now so opportunities find you later. Do all three early and you get an advantage than your other colleagues.
